I finished this quilt in early December and snapped a few pictures before I put it in the mail. I was unable to get picture up and a blog post written before we left for vacation the next day so I had to be content to share pictures upon my return.
This is my third version of my Milky Way Medallion pattern, custom ordered in Black, Brown, Navy, Grey and White to coordinate with a bow tie quilt that the customer had previously purchased from me. The requests also included a low volume background and modern but girly prints – you can read more about it in my original post here.
Since the colors requested are not typically “girly” colors I wanted the prints themselves to be more feminine. I used a lot of florals, polka dots, and a few animal prints to help keep it within the theme. I also pulled a few metallic prints which are subtle but add a little bling to the quilt (and what girl doesn’t love a little bling here and there?).
For the back I wanted to keep the look modern and similar to the bow tie quilt. I went with a solid black and added low volume rectangles with pops of color in different sizes to keep the back interesting. I kept the quilting simple with an allover meander in off white Aurifil –
the same quilting I did on the first custom ordered quilt. For binding
I went with a black, grey and white stripe and hand stitched it to the
back of the quilt.
I also did a little fussy cutting on some of the fabrics, which ended up
being some of my favorite parts of the quilt. I just adore this deer
and the metallic gold tree on the back are probably my two favorite
parts of the entire quilt.
I love that I have now made this pattern three times, it really shows how different it can look in different fabrics. Now to try and check off a few of those UFOs….

Is the Milky Way Medalllion Pattern still available in your Etsy shop? I did not see it there. It does look beautiful in several different colorways.

That is gorgeous. Is the tree blackberry lane? The deer and squirrel look like that line but I don't recognise the tree. Thanks for linking up with TGIFF!

The fabrics requested seem like an unusual request – the joy and challenges of custom quilt orders. I love the back – perhaps even more than the front (I hope you don't mind).

oh my WORD that is GORGEOUS. It's definitely my favorite so far out of all of them, which is not what I was expecting with the color palette. Although now that I think about it, maybe it makes sense since it is a color palette that leans masculine, and you know me and my masculine quilt love ;P. I was not expecting you to use so much white/low volume, and that really keeps it airy feeling. And all the florals DO make it feminine, which is perfect! And now you have me wanting to buy a bunch of that tree + deer fabric to do a fusscut quilt all about that pattern. Darn you and your making me want to buy more fabric skills. lol 🙂
