A while back I was thinking about trying to make my own medallion quilt. I had seen a few pop up on the internet over the last year, specifically Marcel’s Medallion from the Liberty Love Book by Alexia Marcelle Abegg and more recently the Aviatrix Medallion over at Oh Fransson!
I thought a medallion quilt would be a perfect way feature my 8 point star without have to make a million of them – (since they are paper pieced). In addition to creating the center star I reworked the pattern so it no longer includes Y-Seams (or partial seams). It is ten million times easier to put together now and I actually think I could do an entire quilt out of these!
So that stack of fabric I shared with you last week has turned into the center block and now the beginnings of a few of the borders!
I look forward to sharing more with you!
Elise

absolutely love your design!!! I particularly like how the star pieces are pieced together in a scrappy sort of way / no two alike. I too like the gray.

this is a really beautiful block, and will be gorgeous as a medallion center, or with an entire quilt of them!
Thanks for linking up to Needle and Thread Thursday!

What a great block and love the color choices. Can't wait to see how you design the rest.

A medallion quilt is a brilliant idea! This block is perfect for that! Glad to hear you have been working on the design and have figured out how to assemble it without the Y seams. The mere mention of the letter Y gives most folks the willies. Love the colour combo you chose!
Susan at TheBoredZombie.com says
Beautiful! I need to make something similar to this with all of the seams coming together in the center. I can't think of a good way to deal with the bulk though. Any hints?

Love the colors. I'm definitely jealous of some of those greys! Getting rid of y-seams is also excellent. I will admit to being one of those people to whom "the letter y gives the willies." π

This is a wonderful block to have in the center of a medallion quilt! I am planning a medallion quilt for later this year and have been thinking of a mariner's compass center. Look forward to see yours come together!
