I have been making slow but steady progress on my flower applique quilt. Since I want the flowers to overlap in different areas I can’t just applique them down when they are finished as this is more of a design as I go project. In the above picture only the orange flower is fully appliqued down (minus the center) and the other flowers are only sewn down in certain spots. The process does make it a bit tricky to go from designing to actually sewing since I need to remove so many pieces, but I find that I am enjoying it. It is interesting making these flowers on such a large scale, I find that I have to remind myself to keep making the templates bigger so the flowers don’t end up too small (currently the smallest flower in 12″ and I don’t want to go much if any smaller). I already have the templates cut for my next flower and I hope to share more progress next week.

just popped over from My Quilt Infatuation. Love your flowers! Are you following a pattern?
Elise Lea says
Thanks for Stopping by Lace! I am not following any pattern for my quilt. I am drawing up the patterns in illustrator as I think of them and then printing full scale templates of each of the pieces. It is kind of a design as I go quilt!
Teje says
Hi! This looks gorgeus! Big, colourful flowers over the low volume quilt are so beautiful! Great idea! x Teje
Elise Lea says
Thanks Teje! I got the idea from an Anthropologie blanket I saw, but wanted to change the idea and make it more mine.
Cathy says
I love your fun, big, bright flowers against your neutral background! So pretty!
Elise Lea says
Thanks Cathy! It has been a slow but fun process that is definitely evolving as I go – but sometimes those are the most fun projects to work on!
Vicki in MN says
From one Minnesotan to another- that is going to be an awesome quilt!
Elise Lea says
Thanks Vicki – glad to see another Minnesotan stopping by! Definitely going to need that bright cheery quilt here soon as it is already getting chilly around here.
Lorinda Davis says
I’m so excited to see how this is progressing. It’s going to be so pretty!
Elise Lea says
Thanks Lorinda! It is a time consuming and slow going quilt but I knew that going into it. It is definitely evolving the more i work on it though – but sometimes those are the best projects.
Susan says
You’re flowers are beautiful! The time and effort will pay off
Elise Lea says
Thanks Susan! I appreciate your encouragement as this is a time consuming and tedious quilt.
Cathy says
I love how those bold, bright flowers really pop against the subtle background. Just gorgeous!
Elise Lea says
Thanks Cathy! I am loving the colors against the background so far, but I can’t seem to help myself from adding more in for a little interest.
Denise says
I really like the boldness of the flowers. how many do you think you’ll put on the quilt?
Elise Lea says
Thanks Denise! I have n idea how many I’ll put on. I have a felling I will just keep going until it looks done to me or until I get sick of making flowers.
