After I acquired enough fabric for the background of my applique flower quilt, I quickly whipped up this simple patchwork that will be used for the base of the applique. I went with large blocks because I wanted the fabrics to really shine and hopefully not be too incredibly busy. I am thinking they will be the perfect foundation for the flowers. Something to break up the background while at the same time stand out against the colors of the flowers.
I also picked out the colors I am going to use in the quilt, which took me surprisingly longer than I expected. My inspiration quilt used more dark teals, reds and bold colors where as my version will use brighter colors. I also chose to limit my color palate to pinks, oranges, yellows, and blues. I purposely left out red, green, and purple as i thought they didn’t really work with the color palate I wanted because I was trying to stay away from a complete rainbow. This way I have a complementary/split complimentary combo thing that I think will look great when done.

Love the jewel tones you selected. They will really pop against the black and white. I think omitting the red and green and purple was wise. THey would have been too much like a crayon box rather than a garden.

Thanks Diane! I completely agree I didn’t want it to be a full spectrum I think it would have given it a more juvenile appearance.
